In 2004 an invitation to take part in Bilston Gallery’s Craftsense project lead to John exploring the medium of vitreous enamel for the first time. This was a new departure and allowed him to build on his previous knowledge of metal forming and decorating acquired through making work in response to historic objects. This project allowed him to undertake action research into a new genre of traditional industrial metal forming and decorating processes and apply them to a contemporary craft context.

Subsequent to this, new enamel work was made for the Craftbox and Playing with Fire touring exhibitions building on initial research developed during the Making Connections – Craftsense project.
